Robin James Short

6th Dan Instructor and Grading Examiner to the Welsh Shotokan. USA Representative for the WSKO based in Texas. General Secretary to the ISOK (International Society of Okinawan Karate).I began my training in Shotokan Karate with Sensei Haydn James in Cornelly in June 1982 with the KUW, during that time I was afforded the opportunity to train with many great sensei’s of differing styles and technical abilities not to mention, Mike O’Brien, Dave Hazard, Richie Noblett (RIP), Ticky Donovan, Dominic Valero, Chuck Norris, Vince Morris, Hirokazu Kanazawa, Chuck Merriman, and Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace. I participated in many competitions and won team and individual rankings at multiple venues throughout Wales in the 80’s, and I was always ready to attend the next seminar and gleam and learn from the next sensei and was graded to Shodan by Enoeda Sensei in 1986. Due to travelling for my job and leaving the UK, I arrived in the USA and trained in the Kenpo system of Karate, as I was unable to locate a solid Shotokan Karate club in the area of California where I was living, and I obtained my 1st Degree Black Belt April 1996. During this time, I felt like a nomad looking for a club and a style that I could relate to, as many clubs were a mix mash and were not teaching what I knew as real karate, and were teaching a lot of their techniques without any understanding of the Bunkai and no real quality applications. It was during this time I was introduced to the likes of Sensei’s like Vince Morris and Chuck Merriman who had an infinite understanding of karate and more so the Bunkai and applications associated with this,I was afforded an invite to the Jundokan in Okinawa and trained for a deeper karate understanding. I believe this is the moment when my karate just started to click. Still unable to find a style and home for my karate that I could relate too, I reached out back to Wales and started to converse with Sensei Jason Ashcroft, and this is when my association with the WSKO began its journey.

Oliver Massey, Premier Martial Arts/Woodlands

oliver-head-shotb.jpg

I was born and raised in Leeds, England which is known as Muay Thai central for many people in the martial arts community. From the age of 7 I was training with world champions such as Jonathan Haggerty at the famous Nolans gym. I eventually achieved my black belt in a Dutch-Style kickboxing system there. Once I moved to the US I began training in MMA. My goal was to reach the UFC and I was able to realize some of that as I trained with UFC fighters such as Alex Morono and Ricky Turcios. As well as many other professional fighters. Unfortunately, due to medical conditions I had to turn my focus away from competing to instructing after 13 years of fighting. I now love to spread my knowledge and passion of Martial Arts through my students. I believe Martial Arts is the best development tool for anyone, no matter the age or experience. I have taught for the past two years and don’t think I will ever stop.

Dennis Reeves, Premier Martial Arts/Woodlands

dennis-head-shota.jpg

My name is Dennis Reeves, and I am a 22 year old martial arts instructor for Premier Martial Arts in Kingwood. I have a colorful martial arts background that includes Taekwondo of which I am a 3rd Degree black belt. I have also studied Wing Chun, Kendo, as well as various armed martial arts of both eastern and western origins. My favorite weapon of all has to be the katana, as the discipline and mindset taught to me by the weapon has formed the backbone for the rest of my martial arts abilities. I have a strong passion for martial arts both in sharpening the skills that I already have, and in learning and absorbing new techniques into my skill set. Most importantly, I am excited to show what I can do, as well as learn something new along the way!

I have been studying martial arts for my whole life. I started when I was 7 years old, training at a Kung Fu studio in San Antonio, Texas. I received my junior black belt in April of 2017, and received my adult first degree black belt in October of 2019. I received my second degree black belt in Northern Shaolin/Northern Praying Mantis shortly after. I took a short break from martial arts training while I was in college; however, I still practiced when visiting the Houston, Texas area during weekends and school breaks. In August 2022 I was hired as Head Instructor for Premier Martial Arts The Woodlands. Through Premier Martial Arts I have the opportunity to teach individuals about the benefits of martial arts, make my passion my career AND train in their system. Premier Martial Arts teaches kickboxing, Krav Maga, submission grappling, kali and sport weapons. In November of 2023 I received my first degree black belt through Premier Martial Arts. Jeremy May, Rolling Dragon Chinese Kempo

Carl Schalyo, Rolling Dragon Chinese Kempo

 carl-jeremy-pic-1-.jpeg

Jeremy May

Jeremy May stands as a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and passion that define a true martial artist. Currently holding the esteemed rank of 2ndDan in the IKCA Kenpo system, Jeremy's journey in the martial arts world has been shaped by the teachings and lineage of Grandmaster Carl Schalyo and the Rolling Dragon Chinese Kenpo organization. Jeremy's martial arts odyssey began in 2010 under the guidance of Carl Schalyo and Kent Holland in the serene surroundings of Green Valley, Arizona. Little did he know that this initial step onto the martial arts path would lead him to a profound connection with the art of Kenpo Karate. Throughout his eight-year journey to black belt, Jeremy found himself under the tutelage of some of the most distinguished and highly ranked Kenpo black belts, including Chuck Sullivan, Vic LeRoux, Joel Ellis, Chuck Boyd, James Parson, Greg Satterfield, Archie Thompson, and many more. In January of 2019, Jeremy reached a significant milestone in his martial arts career when he was promoted to the prestigious rank of 1st Dan by Senior Grandmaster Chuck Sullivan in Tucson, Arizona. This recognition served as a testament to Jeremy's unwavering commitment and the culmination of years of disciplined training. One of the highlights of Jeremy's martial arts experience was the opportunity to train at the IKCA headquarters and the home of Chuck Sullivan. These experiences not only expanded his knowledge and skills but also deepened his understanding of the art and philosophy of Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate. Today, Jeremy May, in collaboration with his esteemed mentor Carl Schalyo and his wife Amy May (1st Dan), contributes to the legacy of Rolling Dragon Chinese Kenpo by teaching at their small school in Cypress, Texas. The trio aims to impart their collective wisdom, fostering a new generation of martial artists and ensuring the preservation of Kenpo's rich traditions. Jeremy's love for Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate remains a driving force in his journey, and he envisions continuing this path indefinitely. With a second-degree black belt as a testament to his skill and dedication, Jeremy May stands as a living embodiment of the indomitable spirit that defines the martial arts journey.

 Carl Schalyo

In 1963, Grandmaster Carl Schalyo commenced his martial arts training at the inaugural Crenshaw “Ed Parker/Chuck Sullivan Kenpo Karate School” located on Crenshaw Boulevard in Southwest Los Angeles, studying under the tutelage of the esteemed system founder, Senior Grandmaster of Kenpo Karate Edmund K. Parker, Sr. (IKKA), and Senior Grandmaster of the International Karate Connection Association (IKCA), Chuck Sullivan. His dedication and proficiency led to his promotion to 1st Degree Black Belt
by Mr. Parker and Mr. Sullivan in 1968. Notably, Carl holds the distinction of being one of the pioneering members of the Over Hill Gang, an elite group of 15 Black Belts promoted at the Crenshaw School and is also a Charter Member of the Ancient Warriors being one of the first 15 from the Crenshaw School. Beyond his own training, Carl served as an instructor at both the South La Brea Studio in Inglewood and the Santa Monica School in West Los Angeles. Throughout his professional tenure, Carl seamlessly integrated teaching into various facets of his work. Upon retirement, he chose to persist in his teaching endeavors, ultimately reconnecting with an acquaintance from his teenage years, Chuck Sullivan. A straightforward phone call to the International Kenpo Karate Connection (IKCA) ensued, during which the interactions with Chuck and Vic felt akin to conversing with longstanding friends, as if resuming a conversation from just the previous day. The subsequent developments in this renewed connection have since become an integral part of my personal history. During my teaching tenure at both Ed Parker's West Los Angeles Studio and the La Brea School, I adopted a comprehensive approach to martial arts education. The training sessions were structured, emphasizing a brief warm-up followed by a dedicated focus on the fundamentals. The curriculum included rigorous drills on basic techniques, underscoring the importance of mastering the essentials. Our training regimen also incorporated running technique lines and engaging in sparring sessions, providing practical experience in the application of learned skills, with a specific emphasis on the art of fighting. With comprehensive training at the Crenshaw school under the guidance of Senior Grand Master Ed Parker Sr and Chuck Sullivan, the latter holding the rank of a 1st Degree black belt at the time. The learning experience was enriched by the expertise of skilled martial artists, including George Quinones, Vic Leroux, Steve Saunders (Muhammad), Stacy Picascia, and Chuck Boyd, all of us were white belts during that period. This diverse group of brought a wealth of knowledge and dedication to the training sessions, contributing to a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. The interactions with individuals at various stages of their martial arts journeys added a unique dimension to my training, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual growth within the martial arts community. Each instructor, irrespective of their belt level, played a pivotal role in shaping my understanding of martial arts and contributed to the foundation of my skills. (Vic Leroux's poignant quote, “Hey Carl I still remember the day you and Mr. Parker kicked me in for my 1st Dan Black Belt. Your Brother. Vic Leroux 10th Dan”, captured in an autographed copy of Masters Magazine, reflects a significant and cherished moment in the martial arts journey of both Carl and Vic. The phrase "kicked me in" is a colloquial expression within martial arts communities, symbolizing the ceremonial or formal acknowledgment of an individual achieving the rank of black belt. This momentous event not only underscores the shared history and camaraderie between Carl Schalyo and Vic Leroux but also highlights the supportive and collaborative nature of the martial arts community. Vic Leroux's choice of words, "your brother," signifies a deep bond forged through the mutual pursuit of martial excellence, emphasizing the familial and interconnected spirit within the martial arts family. The autograph becomes a tangible memento of a significant milestone in Vic Leroux's martial arts journey, forever linking him to the mentorship and support provided by Carl Schalyo and Mr. Parker during this pivotal moment of achievement. It serves as a testament to the enduring connections and shared memories that make the martial arts community a truly special and supportive environment.)
